Options & Opportunities for New or Enhanced Funding of Tourism & DMOs in the Recovery from COVID-19

Let’s build back budgets better!

Civitas, in partnership with Miles Partnership and Tourism Economics, is proud to release new research on the impact and future of tourism & DMO funding in response & recovery from COVID-19.  In this report, we share past, present, and future data, funding options, and key recommendations in Funding Futures, a comprehensive look on the response and recovery from the COVID-19 crisis, and the future of tourism and DMO funding. The project analyzed 115 North American cities, all 50 U.S. states, and 10 Canadian provinces to summarize the current situation, the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, and the outlook for recovery. The study also introduces and explores ten alternative funding options for DMOs to be “built back better” – options for more balanced, resilient, and sustainable funding.

The study was undertaken by Civitas, Miles Partnership, and Tourism Economics with support from the Destination Council of US Travel and the Destination Marketing Association of Canada, and with assistance from Destinations International and Destination Analysts.

“We are at a wonderful inflection point, in the sense that pain can be a great motivator for change within communities and within DMOs”
