San Gabriel: A City with a Mission – Literally!

San Gabriel is a “City with a Mission” — literally!
It is the site of the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel, the 4th of an eventual 21 Spanish missions in California and a place of great historical interest in itself. Of additional significance, a nine mile walk from the Mission led to the foundation of a pueblo that became the city of Los Angeles, which is why those in the know recognize the City of San Gabriel as the “Birthplace of the Los Angeles Region.”

To this day, San Gabriel retains its legacy of history, culture and art. Its Mission District contains City Hall, the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse and other treasures of Spanish, Native American and early American history. Also located in San Gabriel are three adobes that are each over 200 years old, and the Victorian Hayes House that is now a museum open to the public.

San Gabriel is also known for its authentic Asian cuisines. At only four-square miles, the City boasts over 200 restaurants ranging from fast casual dumpling spots to fine dining lobster restaurants. Visitors come to San Gabriel to experience the City’s extensive diverse flavors. Located minutes east of downtown Los Angeles, the City attracts the most discerning taste buds.

In early 2019, the City Council voted for something new — a new marketing and tourism district for San Gabriel. Assessment charges began in July 2019, and the district is expected to generate an estimated $193,000 annually to promote travel and tourism to its destination. Far from being lost to time, San Gabriel is instead well funded for its current mission to share its treasures with the world.
