We are thrilled to celebrate a transformative milestone for Seminole County, FL—the formation of the Seminole County Tourism Improvement District (SCTID)! Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Gui Cunha, the Director of Seminole County Department of Economic Development & Tourism and the unwavering support of the Board of County Commissioners (BCC) and the Tourist Development Council, this initiative will strengthen the county’s tourism economy, enhance its appeal, and drive significant visitation to local hospitality businesses.
With an assessment of $1.75 per available room for tourism properties with 54 or more rooms, the SCTID is expected to generate approximately $3.2 million in its first year, significantly increasing the county’s tourism budget. As Florida’s first countywide TID, this district is set for a minimum of 10 years, with the potential to extend to 30 years if tied to a bond.
A Collaborative Effort for a Stronger Future
The formation of the SCTID was a testament to the power of collaboration. More than 2,500 rooms across Seminole County endorsed the initiative, highlighting a strengthened partnership between hoteliers and county leadership. Over the three-year journey to establish the district, local hoteliers became increasingly engaged, recognizing the significant benefits of sustainable tourism funding.
The funds generated will be strategically invested in initiatives that boost hotel occupancy, elevate Seminole County’s tourism profile, and stimulate economic growth. Key areas of focus include:
- Capital improvements, including potential bonds for long-term enhancements.
- Incentives and hosting fees to attract high-impact conventions and events.
- Major sports tournaments and industry events that generate overnight stays.
- Development of a multipurpose indoor sports facility, strengthening Seminole County’s position as a premier sports tourism destination.
“Our sports supported us all through COVID. It was sports — that was what put us back on the map and got people back in here. So, to see a new project come along, it’s definitely well worth the making,” said Townplace Suites by Marriott General Manager Kristen Oswald.
Driving Growth and Competitiveness
This landmark initiative ensures long-term financial stability for Seminole County’s tourism industry, allowing the destination to remain competitive with leading markets. By investing in infrastructure, marketing, and strategic partnerships, the SCTID will fuel continued growth, job creation, and increased visitor spending.
“This is a game-changer for Seminole County,” said Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Jay Zembower. “By investing in our sports tourism infrastructure, we are driving economic growth, creating jobs, and ensuring our County remains a top destination for major events. We appreciate the collaboration with our hospitality and tourism partners in making this initiative a reality.”
We are proud to have supported the formation of the SCTID and look forward to seeing Seminole County thrive as a sought-after destination. Congratulations to Gui Cunha and the entire team at the Seminole County Department of Economic Development & Tourism, as well as everyone who contributed to this incredible achievement!
